Brixham Rugby Club Chairman's Annual Report 2010
On The Field.
As we look back on this last season it would be very fair to say that this has been a successful one. Firstly I would acknowledge the very positive continued growth and development that the First team have made; we have benefited greatly from our coaches Dan Parks and Emyr Lewis and, from the whole club, would want to say thank you. Also we have had some "adopted" Brixham lads especially from Plymouth and South Africa! We have all enjoyed the impact they have made, and when you add these lads to the Brixham guys it has led to a very credible third position in the league and the place in the Devon Cup Final. Well done to all who have played for the First team this year. Our Crusaders and Albion teams have had a fantastic year by both winning their respective merit tables, a fantastic credit to yourselves and Brixham Rugby Club. The rugby committee, led by James Irvine extremely well, have also done a great job. I would also pay tribute to the colts and say thank you to Paul Dyer and all the lads for keeping going right to the end and am sure it will get better for you all next season.
I would also like to pay tribute to all of the "Workers" that have played such a big part in the background, whether it is with the teams, as managers and coaches, also to the band of older gentleman travelling to each away game and lovingly known as the "Alakados". I would also like to thank Kate, Margo and Trista for all their help in keeping us fed and watered each week.
The final game of the season was a real credit to everyone involved, on and off the park. It was a fantastic way to show the whole of Devon what Brixham Rugby Club is all about. At this point I would like to pay tribute to all our sponsors for the very incredible efforts that YOU have made, and to Mike Keast who has done most of the work pulling them together. I would say that you have done an excellent job, and as you have intimated that this will be your last year, we need to look hard to find someone to take over (and that won't be easy)
The Bar and Function rooms
This year we have made full use of our facilities with everything from weddings, Christenings, Wakes, parties and even a Hindu wedding.
The bar has had a terrific year, with Peter and the whole of his team doing a first class many thanks and well done to you all. Also this year we have taken the step of introducing new tills, with much improved facilities and the ability to offer great deals to our members.
Off The Field
Once again this year we have continued to invest and improve the back stage areas in and around the club. We have spent money and improved the toilets on the first floor; we have continued to raise the profile of maintenance and decorated in many areas. This year one of the major parts of the investment has been the introduction of our own Laundry area. A big well done goes to John & Alison Sharples, and with the help of Barry Thomas and Ray Gardner they have completed a project that will save the club money, for future investment. Other areas include external and internal projects such as the carpet in the lobby. The executive committee have once again worked hard and I would want to pay tribute to each one of them for their support and help. I would like to say a big thank you to Danny, Steve, Bob Houston and Ray for their personal help and guidance.
This year we have also focused our effort on raising funds for other charities such as the Mission for Deep Sea Fishermen, the Lifeboat and on Boxing Day we had a fantastic effort in raising £1,200 for Help 4 Heroes and also enjoying a great day.
From an entertainment point of view we are still learning what our members want and trying to deliver events that will bring the club together. One of those was the "Miss Brixham" competition and this was certainly enjoyed by all who attended.
Finally we have a number of events planned for the next few months that we hope will not only raise money for the club, but will also bring members together and al will enjoy them.
As we look to the new season I believe that this must be the year that we move forward on the park in the same way as we are improving of the field and for me this will mean that we have a collective ambition as a whole club of progressing up to the next level of rugby and be promoted to the national league rugby and I call upon you all to join me in doing whatever you can to achieve this in 2011.
