17th Jan 2010 BRIXHAM v DEVONPORT SERVICES

13th Dec 2009 Brixham v Torquay

29th Nov 2009 Brixham 28 Newton Abbot 24
Newton Abbot won the toss and decided to play with the slope and wind for the first half. Newton got off to a bright start with several testing runs which found holes in Brixham's defence this saw Newton go into a three try lead. Brixham's defence improved as the first half went and Newton got close to Brixham line but were held back. Brixham started to win the scrums with the front five pushing Newton off the ball and winning some good ruck ball with Reef Thompson and Connor Howard having one of their best games in a brixham shirt. Brixham's first try came from some confusion on the Newton try line as a pass back was dropped and Oakley Thompson pounced and touched the ball down.
The second half saw a much improved performance by Brixham with their forwards winning some good ball for their backs to have some penetrating runs deep into the Newton twenty two. After one of these Oliver Jackson came out of a maul to cross the Newton line. Brixham's third try came from Jesse Lowe who crossed the line after some good work by Conner Putt and Callum Smith. Newton weren't letting Brixham have all the play in the second half as they managed to string together several passes to cross the brixham line for a fourth time. Brixham knew they had to score again as the clock ticked away and this saw a strong run by Sam Francis who shrugged off some strong tackles only to be held up as he crossed the line. A five meter scrum was awarded; Brixham won the scrum which saw Sam's brother Jamie Francis cross the line to score his first try for Brixham. Newton hadn't given up and still put pressure on Brixham with a last ditch run - Rob Beconsall made a try saving tackle to give Brixham the win.
Brixham Conversions: Jesse Lowe, Rob Beconsall, Chris Harding and George Voase

11th Oct 2009 Stonehouse Sharks 32 Brixham 14
Brixham remain winless this season as they went down 32-14 at Sharks in Plymouth
Brixham started brightly with them looking to move the ball wide quickly with the whole team getting early touches and all looking to get involved. Unfortunately, poor handling and a failure to control the rucks saw possession wasted and Sharks allowed to get on top. Brixham were pinned back despite the efforts of Thomas Farr, in particular. Chris Harding and Marcus Agates were unable to get forward despite seeing a lot of the ball early on.
Space became available and Sharks took advantage to go in front in the corner. Brixham woke up and hit back from Jesse Lowe with Robert Becconsall calmly putting the conversion over to put Brixham in front. However, the lead was short lived as Sharks bossed the rest of the half and registered three more tries to lead 22-7 at the break.
The second half saw Brixham unable to get on top and reduce the deficit as scrums were lost time-after-time and all the pressure was being applied by Sharks. This saw them then wrap the game up with two more tries. Jesse Lowe went over late on for his second try of the match and converted as well to make the final score 32-14.

3rd Oct 2009 Brixham 0 Kingsbridge 54
Kingsbridge's indian sign over Brixham continued into the new season as they saw off Brixham 54-0 at Astley Park.

Early season rustiness was in evidence as Brixham failed to get out of their half in a one-sided first half that saw Kingsbridge take a 33-0 lead into the break. Brixham could not gain any real possession as Kingsbridge took advantage of big gaps in Brixham's defence.

Brixham showed more character after the break and despite conceding three more tries they certainly made Kingsbridge work hard for their scores. Brixham's three debutantes all saw action with Conor Howard, in particular, working hard to get Brixham going. Other debutantes were Jamie Francis and Calum Smith, who we welcome to the club.

MATCH REPORTS 2008/9 (Under 10s)

Visitors Coalville from Leicestershire were sent home empty handed as Brixham signed off the season in style with a 60:5 demolition of their outclassed opponents.
Brixham were at Coalville from the start with Oakley Thompson powering on and good mauling giving Brixham early joy. This pressure paid off as Jesse Lowe helped himself to two quick tries, the second being scored after he'd run the length of the pitch. The lead was increased by Marcus Agates, who scored his first try for the club, in the corner.
Reef Thompson made it 20:0 followed by further tries from Oakley Thompson and Jesse Lowe, completing his hat-trick. The last ten minutes were incredible as Brixham battered their bemused opponents as Oakley Thompson made it 35 :0. Coalville registered a consolation try but this spurred Brixham on as further tries followed from Rob McLeod (2), Jack Bullions, Jesse Lowe, with his fourth of the match and Oakley Thompson with his third. Jesse Lowe was awarded Man of the Match.

Sunday 26th April 2009
Kingsbridge's indian sign over Brixham continued as they took them apart 40:0 on Sunday. Brixham did manage to win the toss but nothing further as they were systematically taken apart by a physical and well drilled Kingsbridge side. Two early tries left Brixham trailing as they then lost play maker Jesse Lowe, as well as one of his teeth, although he was able to come on after a brief spell on the sidelines.
Brixham tried to get back into the game but gaps appeared as Brixham became more packed in the middle. Kingsbridge took their chances and were 30 points ahead at the break. Brixham tried to hit back in the second period but despite a vast improvement Kingsbridge stretched their lead further without any response.
A second game saw a different Brixham as they drew 15:15. A tight first half saw Brixham 5:0 down despite Man of the Match Oakley Thompson trying to make things happen. Brixham went 10:0 down before Douglas Oakes made room to go over in the corner. Kingsbridge restored the two try advantage but Brixham were not dead and buried as both Oakes and Oakley Thompson grabbed tries to give Brixham a deserved share of the spoils.

Sunday 19th April 2009 BRIXHAM 30 DURSLEY 25

Brixham staged a comeback that Frank Sinatra would have been proud off as they edged out their visitors at Astley Park.
In bright sunshine Brixham had taken an early lead through the impressive Connor Putt but then saw Dursley pull level and then proceed to take Brixham apart to lead 25:5 at the break. Dursley had brought two teams with them which they alternated so all the signs were that more misery would follow for Brixham in the second half but quite the opposite happened as Brix produced a display of positive play where many players excelled including Jack Bullions, Marcus Agates, Oakley and Reef Thompson and Chris who showed confidence in nearly securing his first try for the club.
Jesse Lowe started the second half comeback with a typical try with Douglas Oakes continuing his run of form with a hat trick. A draw looked likely but as Dursley flagged Brixham stayed strong and Marcus Agates made a diagonal run and was alert enough to feed Connor Putt who went over in the corner to seal the victory.

Sunday 12th April 2009 BRIXHAM 35 BARKERS BUTTS 45
Touring side Barkers from Coventry went home happy as they came from behind to hold off Brixham 45:35 at Astley Park.
Oakley Thompson and Douglas Oakes had put Brixham in the driving seat with two early tries but despite early settled play the visitors were allowed time to breakaway twice to pull themselves level and then to take the lead. Marcus Agates continued his improved performances and tried to make room for himself but Brixham never really threatened to take control as Barkers extended their lead before half-time. There was time for Oakes to go close before Reef Thompson thundered over to reduce the deficit at the interval.
In the second half Barkers took advantage of poor rucking and breakdowns in the scrum to pull three tries ahead. Brixham then hit back through Connor Putt, who went over after a searing run from deep. Tries were then exchanged with Oakley Thompson registering a further three tries but Barkers always had their heads in front and managed to keep at least two scores in front right through to the finish.

Sunday 29th March 2009 Totnes 45 Brixham 30
Both defences went missing as Totnes saw off Brixham in a 15 try thriller. A cagey opening eventually saw Jesse Lowe looking for openings before Totnes went over in the corner. Brixham hit straight back with Jack Bullions bursting through the middle to register his first try for the club. Ping-pong rugby then ensued as Totnes went back in front before Brixham man of the match Connor Putt found space and pulled Brixham level. Totnes edged back in front before Putt registered a superb solo effort. Totnes got their noses back in front to lead 20:15 at half time.
The second half saw Totnes going further in front to give them breathing space but they still couldn't shake Brixham off as Thomas Farr powered over. Again Totnes restored the two try advantage before Jesse Lowe unselfishly played Putt in for his hat-trick. Two more tries were exchanged including a deserved try for Lowe but two further Totnes tries saw them home and dry. As a spectacle it was a great advert for youth rugby.

Sunday 8th March 2009 Plymstock 10 Brixham 5
Brixham's away-day blues continued in the wind and rain at Plymstock as they were edged out in a game that they should have won.
Conditions at the start were horrible and Brixham's situation made worse when Jack Bullions had to go off injured with no replacement available. Brixham dominated the rucks with special mention due to both Chris and Robert Becconsall both looking to make things happen when given the ball. Marcus Agates was also looking to get involved. Despite this and Plymstock going in front, Brixham made a real go of it and after being denied what looked like a good try, JESSE LOWE made sure at the second time of asking. But as has been the way this season, Brixham switched off and allowed Plymstock to hit back with the winner right from the restart. Reef Thompson tried to get Brixham back but their pressure brought no reward. Connor Putt, George Voase and Oliver Jackson all played their part and showed great effort.
In a second game, Brixham had their noses in front but ran out of steam as Plymstock managed the conditions better to run out comfortable winners 25-10. In-form Reef Thompson helped himself to both Brixham tries.

Sunday 22nd February 2009
A see-saw battle saw brave Brixham go down 25-20 against Devonport at Astley Park.
Devonport started brightly and saw their early pressure pay off as they took the lead. However, this woke Brixham up and straight from the restart the ball was fed quickly to Douglas Oakes who burst through to score a trademark try. Brixham seemed flat and despite Reef Thompson nearly putting Oakes in again, not enough good pressure or retention of possession saw Brixham fall behind to two well-worked tries to see them 15-5 down at the break.
Brixham began the second half much brighter and were rewarded when Jesse Lowe found the gap to go through to put Brixham back in the hunt. However, this spurred on Devonport to restore the two try advantage as Brixham failed to clear their lines. Again, Brixham didn't give up and with Robert Becconsall looking strong Lowe was able to pull Brixham back to within one score. Brixham then pulled themselves level through a good play of pressure which saw Reef Thompson go over in the corner.
Sadly, Brixham failed to hang on and Devenport scored again to claim the victory.

Sunday 15th February 2009 BRIXHAM 10 TEIGNMOUTH 20
Brixham went down to a strong Teignmouth team but Teignmouth needed two late tries to see off a battling Brixham team.
Brixham kicked off down the slope and despite scrappy ruck play DOUGLAS OAKES was played in to burst through and give Brixham first blood. However, Teignmouth levelled straight from the restart to cancel out the early advantage. Brixham kept probing with both Jesse Lowe and Jack Bullions looking to try something different to open up the Teignmouth defence.
Despite sturdy defending especially from Oakes, Teign went in front by way of a powerful try. Brixham battled back and got a deserved equaliser through CONNOR PUTT, who battled his way over the try line. Jesse Lowe nearly put Brixham back in front but Teignmouth proved too strong and got back in front just before the end. A fourth try for Teign flattered them but to be fair, Teignmouth deserved the victory.
In game two, Brixham threw away a 10-0 lead to be held 10-10. OLIVER JACKSON and DOUGLAS OAKES had put Brixham in charge only for Teignmouth to pull themselves back to gain a draw.

Sunday 1st February 2009
Brixham's change of kit brought a change of luck as they registered their biggest win of the season seeing off their nearest rivals 25-5.
Torquay made the brighter start in wintery conditions and took a early lead going over in the corner catching Brixham off-guard. Brixham struggled to retain the ball initially but had more joy in playing a quick passing game that proved successful as the first half wore on. Jesse Lowe pulled Brixham level with a solo effort and although Torquay fought back gaps appeared which allowed both Douglas Oakes and Lowe again to claim tries.
Torquay played with great determination at the start of the second half but Douglas Oakes put the result beyond doubt with a searing run leaving Torquay's backs trailing in his wake. Torquay tried to get something from the game but late on allowed Oliver Jackson to find space in the corner to wrap up a tremendous performance. Both teams battled well in blustery conditions but Brixham's positive movement proved to be the difference on the day.

Sunday 4th January 2009

Lack of competitive matches undone Brixham as they were outclassed by Kingsbridge going down 9-0. Playing up the slope didn't help although there was no advantage gained in the second half when playing downhill.
Quick ballplay out to the flanks helped Kingsbridge take the lead as Brixham paid the price for playing too narrow. Kingsbridge seemed to find gaps everywhere allowing them to be home and dry 5-0 at the interval. Kingsbridge's teamplay combined with Brixham's poor tackling and slow movement saw the second half follow the same pattern as another four classy tries were added.
More of the same followed in the second game as Brixham went down 6-0.

Saturday 6th December 2008
Brixham were invited to play an exhibition match on Saturday away to Taunton. Nice sunny conditions greeted the two teams at kick off. Brixham took the game to Taunton from the start although Taunton rallied towards the end of the half but in between the game descended to a bitty stop-start affair in the middle of the park. Brixham came closest to opening the scoring at the start of the second half but fell just short of the try line. Neither side could break the deadlock as the clock ran down. Despite it being a scoreless match Brixham gave a good account of themselves.

Sunday 7th December 2008
On Sunday, Brixham entertained Newton Abbot at Astley Park and were edged 4-3 by Newton. Brixham started slowly and were soon 3-0 down due to poor rucking and speedy forward play by Newton. The second half was a different game altogether with Brixham hitting back through a superb solo try from George Voase. Newton restored the 3 try advantage but Brixham dominated after that with both Reef Thompson and Douglas Oakes both going over to pull Brixham back into the match. Good attacking play and constant late pressure saw Brixham on top but unable to snatch a draw.
In a second game, Brixham again allowed Newton to race into a 2-0 lead but in the second half Jesse Lowe flew over to pull Brixham back and Man of the Match Douglas Oakes levelled the game with a trademark try. Newton then put their noses back in front but Douglas Oakes went over to snatch a deserved draw for Brixham. Both teams should be applauded for their good sportsmanship over the two games.

Sunday 9th November 2008 TEIGNMOUTH 35 BRIXHAM 10
Teignmouth’s under 10’s steady start to the season carried on with a hard fought win over a competitive Brixham side. The game was played in poor conditions with strong winds and heavy rain making the ball hard to handle for both sides. Teignmouth got off to a good start with Dan Woolnough and Archie Pope both scoring before Peter Brogden scored on his debut after several surging runs. Brixham were next to score but Teignmouth hit straight back through Kyran Rendle and Morgan Tait who both touched down to give Teignmouth a 25 point to 5 half time lead.
Teignmouth continued to control most of the second half with Freddy Fearnly having an excellent game in defence and attack. Henry Annal showed excellent support wining lots of ball for his side and was unlucky not to be awarded a try close to the end. Teignmouth did extend their lead with both Kyran and Dan putting in excellent performances and scoring well deserved second tries. Brixham scored one but could not prevent Teignmouth from grabbing a well deserved win.
