MATCH REPORTS 2009/10 (Under 14s)
21st March 2010 BRIXHAM 24 BEAUFORT COLLEGE 38
Lax tackling in the opening minutes left Brixham 14 points down and facing a drubbing. Fortunately they remembered how to stop the opposition and began to put pressure on the visitors. Eventually this bore fruit when pack leader Isaac Fahey crashed over for a try.
Beaufort started the second half as they had the first - an early try restored their lead. Hard work by Brixham saw them back attacking the Beaufort line and from a 5m lineout Thomas Brook drove over for a try. Harvey Piper converted from the touchline. The vistors replied quickly - their No 8 picking up from the base of a scrum to go over unopposed. A second try by Fahey, converted by Piper and, straight from the restart, a try by Pitman, put Brixham just two points behind.
Brixham hopes of victory were dashed when they were wrongfooted by the restart kick; Beaufort recovered it and raced in for a try. The visitors sealed the win when their backs combined for a last, converted try but it had been a good, ding-dong match.
14th March 2010 BRIXHAM 0 CREDITON 36 - Devon Plate
31st Jan 2010 BRIXHAM 22 TOTNES 12 - Devon Plate
Brixham led 10-7 at the break but had to come from behind after Totnes scored a try in the opening minutes of the second period.
Brixham tries were scored by Jack Akery, Isaac Fahey, Conner Jarvis and Jake Pitman - who also landed a conversion.
21st Nov 2009 Paignton 26 Brixham 0
Saturday morning, and the Devon Cup, took Brixham to Queen's Park. Despite having an under-strength team and with several positional changes forced upon them, Brixham produced one of their best performances of the season.
Among the changes, Harvey Piper was drafted in as a prop and when Sam Robinson had to come off after ten minutes winger Ryan Pierce had to go into the second row.
Two breakaway tries, and a third before the break took Paignton 19-0 clear at the interval. Brixham had their fair share of possession but could not turn it into points. Nico Sharpe had several good runs and was unlucky not to gain any reward.
Brixham dominated the second half and with Paignton conceding penalties kept the Cherries penned back. Paignton were forced to rely on Brixham mistakes and went further ahead with another breakaway try. Before the end Brixham had to replace the injured Jake Pitman and Jack Akery but there was no further scoring.
25th Oct 2009 Brixham 57 Crediton 7
Brixham were back in action after their cancelled game last week against Newton Abbot and were quick to impress with some slick moves in the early stages of the game. Playing up the hill into a strong breeze Brixham were soon pumelling the Crediton defence with exellent forward rucking and quick ball for the backs and could easily have scored several tries if Crediton's tackling had not been so good but it was only a matter of time until they scored. Thomas Brooke once again showed his strentgh and commitment to drive over for the opening try. This was the momentum they needed and further tries by Jack Gray and Neeko Sharpe who was playing in his first game saw the lead stretch to 19-0 at half time.
The second half started with uncontested scrums after a request from the Crediton coach who moaned at the ref constantly throughout the game, which was a pity, but the Brixham boys soon took control of the game and use the slope and wind to their own advantage. Isaac Fahey dropped a lovely ball over the crediton defence for Jake Pitman to run onto to score a wonderful try. It then became one way traffic. Brixham scored tries by Josh Peters, Albert Jarvis and two more from Jake Pitman. Charlie North playing on the wing caught the ball from a 22 restart and ran through a stiff defence for his first try of the season; Harvey Piper made five conversions and Pitman one and even let number 8 Adam Penfold try his luck - but he hit the post.
The final score was 57 -7 to Brixham as Crediton scored a breakaway try which was just reward for thir commitment throughout.
11th Oct 2009 BRIXHAM 34 TOTNES 37
Brixham started well with Adam Penfold taking the ball from the kick off and driving through the Totnes defence to set up a ruck which saw the ball go to Jordan Watson who went on the blindside and offloaded to Isaac Fahey to score a try. Totnes were awarded a penalty soon after and chose to take the points which were to come back and haunt Brixham later in the game.
Brixham forwards were getting the upper hand and good work saw Thomas Brooke score to extend the lead to 10-3. From the restart Piper took the high ball and offloaded to Jake Pitman who used his strength to break through the visitors defence and run half the pitch for a try. Totnes then came back at Brixham and when the home side were caught offside the ref played advantage and Totnes used their backs well to score. The visitors had now upped their game and only a try scoring tackle from Jack Akery stopped them from scoring. Good work from the Brixham forward Josh Peters saw him rip the ball and again offload to Pitman to score again. This should have been the half time score but with the ref saying one more play Brixham choose to run the ball from the restart and paid the penalty as Totnes got hold of the ball and managed to score on half time (24-17).
The second half started with a breakaway by Pitman who passed out only for the ball to be knocked on when they looked likely to score, Totnes took advantage of this to score and close the gap to 24-22.
Brixham made several changes with Jake Perkes, Charlie North and Jake Akery making way for Ryan and Ellis Butler and Callum Whitbread to come on but Totnes were awarded a penalty for offside and quick thinking from their flyhalf saw him tap and go from 10 metres to score and take the lead. Brixham managed to pick up their game and score another try only for Totnes to breakaway again and score to retake the lead. Totnes were using their back line well and even with great defence, Brixham could not stop them scoring to lead 29-37. Brixham came back again and a great move from the backs saw Ryan score his first ever try for Brixham when he sprinted 50 yards to score for the final score of Brixham 34 Totnes 37.
How important that early penalty turned out to be.
Brixham coach Sean Perkes was happy with the commitment and passion they had shown and is sure they will take heart from this performance.
4th Oct 2009 Tiverton 15 Brixham 47
Brixham travelled to Tiverton in the Devon Cup and were rewarded with a good all round performance against a spirited Tiverton side.
Brixham scored their first try after a well worked penalty saw Adam Penfold drive though Tiverton defence only to just fall short and after good rucking Thomas Brooke scored and Harvey Piper converted, Brixham soon scored a second try through Jake Pitman after good work by the backs.
Tiverton showed spirit and after several breakaways which were halted by Brixham defence they managed to score but this only seemed to wake Brixham up and Pitman score the second of his three tries. His third came from a well worked move that saw Jake Perkes get the ball out to Piper who dummied inside to offload to Pitman to score and converted by Piper to lead 26-5 at half time.
The 2nd half started well with good work by Josh Peters and Sam Robinson in the ruck which resulted in the ball coming out to Conner Jarvis to run 40 yards to score his first ever try, Again Brixham attacked and when Josh Peters drove through and picked out Sam Robinson to crash though for another try. Brixham then scored the best try of the game with the ball going right along the back to piper on the wing who cut back and offloaded to Jack Gray to score.
Brixham made a couple of changes midway through the half and Tverton who never gave up and scored two more tries but Brixham ran out 47 -15 winners.
Sunday 6th September 2009 Withycombe 5 Brixham 39
Brixham started their season with an away trip to Withycombe and the hard work that they had put in pre season soon started to pay off with a flowing move through the backs seeing Ricki Workman scoring in the corner, Soon after this Jake Pitman scored the first of his three tries with the help of a good scrum from Brixham forwards, Withycombe were putting up a good defence and it was only the Brixham fitness that saw them take control of the game and lead at half time 22- 5 after Withycombe scored a breakaway try which appeared to knocked on but it was justice for their hard work.
At half time the decision was taken to change positions with Ellis Butler who was hooking to come off and be replaced by Harvey Piper who moved from Fly half to hooker and Issac Fahey replacing him. The second half belonged to the Brixham forwards with Josh Peters and Thomas Brooke making some crunching tackles, Brixham also welcomed back Sam Robinson after his broken arm last season and he marked his comeback with a try, Brixham scored two more tries from Jake Akery and Issac Fahey with only two of the tries being converted both by Piper making the final score 39-5.
It was a difficult task to pick a man of the match and it was awarded to the team for a solid team performance which they will look to take forward to the next match against Devon Champions Ivybridge.

Brixham won both of their opening group games - easily against the scratch Barbarians side and less convincingly against Tiverton.
In the subsequent "Cup Group" Brixham were comprehensively beaten by Tavistock and Exeter Chiefs.
Kingsbridge beat Tavistock in the Tournament final - congratulations to both teams.
Our thanks to the referees who officiated tirelessly in the spring sunshine!
Friday 17th April 2009 BRIXHAM v IVYBRIDGE
Congratulations to the three players that represented South Devon in the Devon Festival - Thomas Brooke, Harvey Piper and Jake Pitman

South Devon A were outright winners winning all three games by large margins. Jake Pitman was amongst the try scorers for South Devon
Sunday 5th April 2009 BRIXHAM 24 BRISTOL SARACENS 17
Brixham played some of their best rugby of the season to beat touring side Bristol Saracens on Sunday morning.
They took an early lead when George Meredith raced through for the opening try converted by outside-half Harvey Piper but, despite having the better of the play, could not add to their score. Good attacking play by the Saracens midway through the first half got them on the scoreboard with a try and for most of the rest of the half they were on top. With the half-time whistle looming Brixham emerged from staunch defence and their forwards drove Josh Peters over for a try and a 12-5 interval lead.
In the second period Brixham, with the advantage of the slope, started strongly. Six minutes into the half Brixham attacked and George Meredith chipped over the Saracens' defence; a kindly bounce enabled him to collect and touch down under the posts. Piper added the extras. Four minutes later and a multi-phase attack took Brixham from their own half to the Saracens line - Isaac Fahey grounding the ball with the support of the Brixham pack.
Saracens strengthened their team with tactical substitutions and reduced the Brixham lead with two tries but when the final whistle blew it was Brixham on the attack and a last minute try was denied them.
Sunday 29th March 2009 BRIXHAM 49 TOTNES 28
Brixham entertained Totnes for the third time this season just a few weeks after their win in the plate competition, Brixham started well but could not convert early pressure and were made to pay with Totnes scoring two converted tries. Jack Akery helped Brixham out with a fine interception which was converted by Harvey Piper and after more pressure from Brixham pack Isaac Fahey scored in the corner and Jake Pitman used his kicking length to convert the first of three very difficult conversions. Now Brixham were on level terms they started to play better rugby and produced the best rucking and mauling of the season to lead 28 -14 at half time after tries by Adam Penfold and Jake Pitman which were converted by Piper.
Totnes had the better of the 2nd half and showed good sprit to score two more converted tries to level 28 all after a mistake by the ref Sean Perkes who blew up for a Brixham try only to cancel it after noticing it was on the 5 metre line ( it was his first match ). Again Brixham moved up a gear to score again with Adam Penfold taking the ball over for his second try which was well converted by Pitman. With Brixham fired up and good work by Captain Josh Peters and Thomas Brooke in the scrum Adam Penfold scored his third try which was converted by Piper to lead 42-28, Brixham were not finished yet and it was left to Jake Pitman to score and convert the final try for Brixham to win 49-28.
Brixham Scorers: Tries: Adam Penfold (3), Jake Pitman (2), Jack Akery, Isaac Fahey. Conversions: Harvey Piper (4), Jake Pitman (3)
March 22nd 2009 BRIXHAM 40 PLYMSTOCK 15
Brixham bounced back from their heavy Devon Plate defeat with a win over Plymstock in glorious conditions on Sunday. This was a hard-fought match and the visitors ran Brixham closer than the scoreline might suggest.
Early Brixham pressure brought no reward and Plymstock should have gome ahead when they ran the ball out of defence - only for it to be dropped in the act of try-scoring. Further Brixham pressure was rewarded when flanker Harvey Piper broke off a scrum to touch-down under the posts; which he also converted.
Brixham showed the value of good support play when they added two more tries before half-time, scored by George Meredith and Jake Pitman and both converted by Piper. Between these Plymstock got on the scoreboard with an unconverted try.
Despite the 21-5 interval lead Brixham were made to work hard in the second period and went further ahead when Pitman capitalised on Plymstock's hesitancy in defence and won the chase to a kick ahead to touch down. Piper again added the extras.
A period of pressure by the visitors' forwards resulted in a try but Brixham were straight back on the attack from the kick-off and Pitman secured his hat-trick of tries (but missed the conversion). Plymstock were well behind but not beaten and a prolonged passage of attacking pressure sternly tested the Brixham defence. Plymstock eventually found a way around it with a try in the corner.
With time running out Brixham rounded the game off with a final score - Thomas Brooks powering over for a try; Piper's fifth conversion brought the final whistle.
Sean Perkes was so pleased with the team performance that he was, unusually, short of words - someone else had to order his celebratory pint of squash.
Sunday 1st March 2009 Brixham 31 Barnstaple 26
This game was a wonderful advert for youth rugby which saw Brixham just come out on top ; but this was a game of two halves. With Brixham man of the match Jake Pitman scoring 4 of their 5 tries, Brixham started well and good work from the forwards saw Jake Pitman break the deadlock with a well worked try in the corner which saw him just miss the conversion.Brixham second converted try was an interception by Isaac Fahey. Brixham seemed to grow in strength and stature and even when Barnstaple put them under pressure the defense stood up with excellent tackles by Josh Peters and Bradley Farmer. With Brixham on their own goal line they won a 5 meter scrum and when it looked like they would clear their lines with a kick Jake stepped inside and cut through Barnstable’s defense to run the full length of the pitch to score under the post converted by Harvey Piper for a 19-0 lead, Barnstaple came back at them and after several awarded penalties they scored a converted try in the last play of the half.
Brixham stated the second half well but could not seem to score as good defense by Barnstaple kept them out. This was the encouragement they needed and Barnstaple stormed back with 3 tries to trail 19-17, Brixham made a couple of changes which seem to help them and good work from Callum Whitbread who took his opportunities well with good running an ball retention before Jake Pitman scored his third try but the conversion was missed. Barnstaple again came back to score a converted try to level the scores, Barnstaple were now looking for the win but after good defense by Brixham and as the ball came out from a scrum on the 22 line with minutes to spare somehow the ball got to Jake Pitman who again show his speed to score the winning try.
Brixham Coaches thanked Barnstaple for a wonderful game played in excellent spirt and told them they were a credit to Barnstaple RFC.
Sunday 1st February 2009
On Sunday Brixham were in action in a Devon Plate game against Totnes. The cold weather did little to dent the enthusiasm of either side and Brixham went through with a 27-17 victory. Totnes agreed to move the fixture to Brixham due to their pitch being unplayable so the game could go ahead on Brixham's main pitch which all the boys enjoyed.
Totnes started well and Brixham held off several good attacks from Totnes before good work from Jack Gray and Isaac Fahey who chipped over the top and afrter winning the ruck it was passed out by Jake Perkes to Harvey Piper who sent a miss pass to Jack Akery to score in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Brixham's second try came after good work on the ground by the forwards and Jake Pitman scored after a good pickup to lead 10-0. Brixham thought they had scored a third try by fullback George Meredith from another missed pass move only for it to be ruled out for a foot in touch.
Totnes kept going and were rewarded with a converted try after good work from their backs but could not contain the Brixham pack who were regulary winning the line out and after being held up on the line twice for a try and first half time running out the pack secured the ball from the scrum and an inside pass to Jake Pitman saw him score and with a good conversion from Piper saw Brixham lead 17-5 at half time.
Totnes were again put under pressure from Brixham after a fine 60 meter clearance from Fahey found touch but the could not convert the chance from the resulting line out and when Totnes won the ball from a ruck the worked the ball well across the backs and scored a converted try to make the score 17-12. From the restart Brixham were awarded a penalty which was converted to make the score 20-12.
Brixham lost both props Thomas Brooke and Sam Robinson who broke his arm ( we wish him well ) and Totnes took advantage of this after winning loose ball and scoring to make the score 20-17,
Brixham were still playing well and after good work from a ruck by Adam Penfold and Jake Perkes the ball got to Piper who again got a pass out to Pitman who rounded the Totnes backs to run 70 metres to score under the posts which was converted by piper for the final score of Brixham 27 - Totnes 17.
With the Totnes backs always dangerous when they had the ball it was a good win for all of the Brixham team. Jake Pitman, with three tries and a penalty goal, was the main scorer, Jack Akery with a try and Harvey Piper (two conversions) also got on the scoresheet.
Sunday 14th December 2008 BRIXHAM 53 TEIGNMOUTH 10
George Meredith scored a try hat-trick as Brixham walloped depleted Teignmouth.
The Fishermen had been boosted during the week before the game by an influx of players - and Meredith was one of them. They had enough replacements to lend Teignmouth four lads when they turned up short-handed.
Brixham's new-look side started with a bang as Jake Pitman and Issac Fahey both scored early tries.
Josh Peter and Harvey Piper combined to put Pitman in under the posts for a try that Fahey converted off the woodwork.
Teignmouths restart was collected by Jordan Watson who passed to Connor Jarvis to make a probing run deep into Teignmouth territory. The ball came back to Fahey from the breakdown and he powered over in the corner.
A speculative attack after Teignmouth knocked on led to Piper putting full-back Meredith over for his first try. The diminutive Ellis Butler on the Brixham wing then beat several players before putting Pitman over for his second try.
Brixham fell back into bad habits by not switching on after the break and conceded a try to Teignmouth.
Then Brixham got back on top and further tries by Watson, Piper and Meredith followed before the try of the match came.
Fahey attacked from a line-out, Perkes was the linkman to Piper who wriggled past three defenders before offloading for Meredith to score his hat-trick try.
Friday 28th November 2008 BRIXHAM 0 PAIGNTON 27
Sunday 9th November 2008 BRIXHAM 29 WITHYCOMBE 7
For the first time this season Brixham got two wins in succession and according to their coaches they are "growing in strength and stature". Against a lively Withycombe side Brixham opened strongly and two converted tries put them 14 points ahead. It was a lead they never looked likely to relinquish though the visitors narrowed the gap with a try midway through the first half.
In the second period the strong wind at their backs assisted Brixham who ran in three more tries - all far from the posts - and the wind was less helpful to the conversion attempts which all failed.
In a solid team performance the scoring was shared out: Jack Grey, Liam Forbes, Jordan Watson, Jake Pitman and skipper Adam Penfold got the tries, Isaac Fahey and Harvey Piper the conversions.
Sunday 2nd November 2008 BRIXHAM 19 PLYMSTOCK ALBION OAKS 10
Oaks started at a rush and came close to scoring after two minutes. Brixham worked their way back into the game and were pressing when Oaks ran the ball out of defence - to run the length of the field for an unconverted try. Brixham returned to the attack and before half-time had taken the lead through a converted try. In the second period Brixham enjoyed the advantages of the wind and slope and scored two further tries; a rare spell of Oaks pressure narrowed the gap but Brixham held out for a hard-earned win.
Isaac Fahey, Sam Robinson and Harvey Piper scored tries for Brixham, Harvey added two conversions.
Sunday 26th October 2008 BRIXHAM 27 SIDMOUTH 29
Only one Youth match was played at Brixham on Sunday but it was one enjoyed by both sets of supporters.
Sidmouth dominated the first half after running in two tries in the first 5 minutes. Their excellent handling and support play denied Brixham any usable ball and it was one-way traffic throughout most of the first period. Two more tries and a conversion extended the Sidmouth lead and it was not until the dying minutes that Brixham made their presence felt.
The second half could almost have been a different game as Brixham launched waves of attack and three tries brought the score back to 22-17 in favour of Sidmouth. With the game slipping away the visitors made a rare foray into the Brixham 22 and were rewarded with a try and conversion to extend their lead. Brixham then resumed their offensive and scored two further tries to close the gap. Both were in the corners and offered no chance of a successful conversion; Sidmouth held on for the win
Brixham's try scorers were Jake Pitman (with a hat-trick), Liam Forbes and Harvey Piper. Piper also landed a conversion.
Saturday 13th September BRIXHAM 39 CREDITON 17
The young fishermen might not have had the bulk of some of their opponents but had more than enough pace and ran out 39-17 winners in an entertaining game. Jack Akery, with three tries and a conversion, was a potent strike force but tries also came from Matt Onslow (2), Alex Ellard and Jordy Watson. Harvey Piper also landed a conversion.
